Blog 3 - Spirited away

For my third blog I chose the movie spirited away the movie was created in 2001 its a Japanese animation fantasy film. Witch was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the idea behind this film was based off of a true story, how Hayao Miyazaki had a little cabin in the mountains and how hed go there on vacation with his family and five other girls whom were friends of the family. Hayao came up with the idea when he wanted to create a movie for him and his friends.

The movie is filled with unrealistic creatures and monsters and the whole movie is based off of the underworld that ten year old, Chihiro Ogino found going on a drive with her parents Akio Ogino and Yuuko Ogino they eventually stopped at a mysterious tunnel in the middle of nowhere on the other side layed a gaost town thé was no one around, but after walking a while the parents smelled something yummy and they were hungry after all that driving. They follow the smell and it leads them to a huge buffet that looked like it was just prepared but yet again there was no one there, Chihiro stared to feel like something wasn’t right she tried getting her parents not to eat the food although deep inside she wanted some too, because she was also starving after walking all this way. So Akio and Yuuko stared eating and they didn’t eat just a little they were eating like pigs they kept eating until nightfall it’s like they couldn’t stop, eventually Chihiro went back to see how her parents were doing but she didn’t see her parents instead she saw two pigs sitting and eating right where her parents were she realised at that moment her parents had turned into pigs…

She stars to walk around in hope that she will eventually find her parents, Chihiro didnt want to believe that she saw what she did, she adventured and came across a young man whom looked familiar to her but she had no idea why his name was Haku, Haku looks familiar to Chihiro because he once saved her from drowning, Haku relises that she is human and tells Chihiro that “she shouldnt be here” and tells her to go back before it gets dark.

When it becomes dark is when all of the spirts start to wake up and the lights start to light up, she starts to see the ghost as they appear in front of her she tries to go back trought the tunnel to get back home just like Haku told her to do but its now all water and theres no way for Chihiro to get across and back home so she hides. Although, Haku senses that Chihiro is still there so he finds her and gives her food because if you dont eat anything in there world you will become a ghost yourself (invisible), Haku then explains that if you breath around the spirits they will acknowledge that she is there but if she holds her breath she should be okay.

Afterwards, Haku tells Chihiro to find the boiler room where they stoke the fires, where she will find Kamaji the boiler man and ask him for a job any job until he says yes even if he refuses he must insist or else Yubaba (the witch that rules the bathhouse) will turn her into an animal just like her parents but if Kamaji agrees then not even Yubaba can do anything to harm her. After this, she heads on over to the boiler room to find Kamaji but she stumbles into a funny looking spirit called no-face, no-face will appear at different times throughout the movie to help Chihiro, the reason behind this is because no-face dosent have a personality or face, no face can only be trough imitation much like a child.

Furthermore, Chihiro is accept for a job after asking countless times to the boiler man if there was anything she could do to help out around the boiler room, he gives her a job at the bathhouse, where Chihiro had worked for a while where she had seen no face many times.

Finally, after proving to Yubaba that she is capable of working at the bathhouse and after saving No-face and Haku with the herbel cake that brought them back to life that she obtained from the ancient river spirit after saving him as well she got the right away to go back home and live a normal life again with her mom and dad. In conclusion, the film ends with Chihiro leading her mother and father out of the bathhouse where she worked, across the bridge that is now there because it is daytime and back to the human world, just like they had never left their car. Chihiro then looks back to see the tunnel they had just come out of and to her eyes its now a ciment wall, no sight of a tunnel and no sigh of an underworld or prof that it was ever there

  1. I really like Japanese animation, I saw Spirited Away and I liked it a lot. I think it's very interesting, and great animation. Your blog is awesome, you put a lot of details about the story, details that I wasn't even aware of when watching it, like for example I didn't know it was based on a true story.
